Description
Why is the sky orange?
Smoke drifting from Canadian wildfires caused the sky in New York City to turn orange.
On Wednesday, June 7th, the area had the worst air quality in the world.
At least 13 US states had air quality alerts in place, impacting an estimated 115 million people.
More than 400 wildfires burning across Canada have left 20,000 people displaced.
The United States sent more than 600 firefighters and equipment to Canada, along with other countries offering their help.
Canadian officials said this could be the country’s worst wildfire season ever.
The fires started early on drier-than-usual ground and accelerated quickly, aided by the prolonged hot, dry weather.
“The month of May was just off the charts – record warm in much of Canada,” said Eric James, a modelling expert with the Co-Operative Institute for Research in Environmental Science at the University of Colorado who is also with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
