Description
Things to know about the Pyramids of Giza…
The Pyramids of Giza are located on the west bank of the Nile River in northern Egypt, close to Cairo.
The structures were built around 2550 B.C., around 4,500 years ago.
The Egyptians believed that the pharaohs were going to become gods in the afterlife, so they had the pyramids built to prepare them for their journey.
Once built, everything the ruler needed in the afterlife was placed inside it.
Part of the construction was the decoration of the structures to provide information about how the pharaoh lived and died. When the ruler died, he was entombed inside it.
It is estimated that the largest of the three pyramids took twenty years to construct, built with a system of ramps that circled around the pyramids as the pyramid rose in height.
Approximately 100,000 men worked on the largest pyramid, living in temporary cities surrounding the work site. Around 20,000 lived in the encampment permanently.
There are three pyramids at Giza, each named for the pharaoh that built it, and each one smaller than the prior one.
I had the opportunity to see the pyramids in person. It was interesting riding up to the pyramids on a camel!
I was immediately struck by their scale. They are beyond huge! It was a staggering site. Nothing prepared me from the photographs I had seen for their actual size!
It was also a complete shock to see how close Cairo is to the pyramids! I thought they were by themselves, out in the desert, but Cairo encroaches on their boundaries.
I also had the opportunity to visit The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Cairo and experienced first-hand the artifacts from King Tut’s tomb.
The almost intact burial of Tutankhamun was discovered in 1922 in the Valley of the Kings, Egypt, and laid to rest there more than 3,000 years ago. It took Howard Carter and his team of experts more than ten years to record, conserve and remove over 5,000 artifacts
.
The boy king died when he was eighteen or nineteen years old.
His body was mummified and encased within eight shrines and coffins in his burial chamber, along with thousands of treasures made of gold, alabaster, and gems.
Never in my life have I experienced anything quite like it! It left me speechless! I would see one priceless artifact, then see ten, twenty, and thirty more, even more exquisite!
If you haven’t been to Egypt, put it on your “must-see” place to visit!
