Description
Absinthe, La Fee Verte, or The Green Fairy, was banned in 1912 because it was believed the green spirit in the bottles was hallucinogenic and dangerous.
Throughout its lengthy history, this green liquor has been blamed for bad behavior and even murder.
Absinthe is an “overproof” liquor, meaning it is a spirit whose ABV (alcohol by volume) is over 50%.
Made from medicinal herbs, plants, and flowers, it is steeped in high-proof spirits.
It was invented in Switzerland as a general cure-all by Pierre Ordinaire, a French physician, in 1792.
Its signature bitter anise flavor comes from a mix of herbs, including fennel and wormwood, a bitter herb notorious for its health benefits and supposed hallucinogenic properties.
Wormwood contains a chemical called thujone, which can be a convulsant if consumed in large quantities.
Thujone is harmless in small quantities (a few servings) of absinthe.
Traditionally, absinthe is not bottled with added sugar, making it a high-proof spirit, instead of a sweetened liqueur, which gives absinthe its sharp, harsh flavor.
