Description
I recently watched a documentary on BBC about the Northern Lights. I was mesmerized as I watched the rippling curtains of lights dance across the sky.
I learned the “Aurora Borealis” (in the north) is actually electrically charged gaseous particles from the sun entering the earth’s atmosphere.
The yellow-green color is produced by oxygen molecules about 60 miles above the earth. The blue and purple-blue or purple-red colors are colliding nitrogen molecules. The all-red auroras – the rarest - are produced by colliding high-altitude oxygen particles, up to 200 miles above the earth.
I knew immediately I had to paint it!
