Description
Duntrune Castle is located in Argyll, Scotland. It is said to the oldest continuously occupied castle on mainland Scotland. Originally built by the MacDougall clan in the 12th century, it was eventually taken by the Campbell clan. The castle was besieged in 1644 by the rival MacDonalds clan. According to a well-known story, when the Macdonalds captured the castle, Alasdair Mac Colla (of the MacDonald Clan) needed to return home and left a small garrison to defend the castle, including his piper. While he was away, the castle was recaptured by the Campbells and all the MacDonalds were killed, except the piper, who was spared because of his status. After retaking their castle, the Campbells laid a trap for the returning Mac Colla. As Mac Colla sailed closer to the shoreline, he and his crew heard the piper, but as the boat got closer to the shore, they were able to decipher the tune as a warning and turned away. To punish the piper, his hands were cut off. The piper bled to death. During castle renovations, workers unearthed a handless human skeleton under a stone path, whose hands had been removed by clean cuts to the wrist. It is believed that the skeleton is the Piper of Duntrune. The Campbells sold Duntrune in 1792 to the Malcoms of Poltalloch, and is now owned by the Malcolm Clan chief. The ghost of the handless piper is said to still haunt the castle to this day.
