Description
Founded in 1862 and named after the local Bannock Indians, "Bannack" was the site of a major gold discovery in 1862. At its peak, Bannack had a population of about 10,000. Extremely remote, it was connected to the rest of the world only by the Montana Trail. There were 3 hotels, 3 bakeries, 3 blacksmith shops, 2 stables, 2 meat markets, a grocery store, restaurant, brewery, billiard and 4 saloons. (The last residents left in the 1970's) The site was declared a national Historic Landmark in 1961 and is presently known as Bannack State Park.
